Hair loss is a common issue men face. It can happen for many reasons like genetics, medical condition, and most notably stress. An individual may stress about work, school, or something personal in their lives. Maybe they’re even stressing over their gradual hair loss which won’t help the situation as it could only cause more hair loss.
This article will look at one of the solutions to hair loss so you don’t stress any further — hair replacement systems, wigs for men or toupees as they’re also called. Moreover, we will discuss the different types of toupee bases that would best suit you.
If you’re in the market for a hairpiece, you will first have to determine what kind of base you’d prefer. Men ideally lean towards a natural-looking toupee with the right amount of hair density. However, if you prefer durability and other factors, there are plenty of options out there.
Choosing The Right Hair System Base | Different Base Materials, Thickness
Listed below are the three different types of hairpiece bases that will help you determine your preferences in a hair system for men.
Lace base hair system
A lace base is a popular choice as it offers many features. A lace base utilizes lace material tied within the base and onto synthetic or human hair. A unique aspect of the lace material is that it provides an extremely natural look.
Lace hair systems are lightweight hair systems – they usually carry low hair density, meaning that it doesn’t have much coverage and volume on the hair. Overall, lace base hair systems aren’t known for their durability as they require high maintenance and aren’t as easy to remove and attach as other hair systems. The upside is they’re comfortable and very breathable – perfect for warmer climates or those who are active and sweat a lot!
Skin base hair system
If you’re looking for the thinnest base in the game, you’re in for a treat. V-loop ventilation is a special feature embedded within ultra thin skin hair systems that’s not available on other bases. As a result, these are extremely natural-looking toupees for men. What’s the catch, you may be asking? It carries low hair density and is not as durable or breathable because of how delicate it is. On the other hand, it offers a fantastic look.
A good rule of thumb is the thicker the base, the more durable the hair system is. The ideal measurement for a natural look is 3-4 mils and that’s what the skin base hair system has to offer. Anything more will not be natural looking, but will provide plenty of durability which is why most durable hair systems always have some form of poly skin whether it’s a coating, a front or perimeter. Another advantage of skin bases are that they are easy to install, remove and maintain and can be used with various attachment options like glue and tape for easy clean-up.
Mono base hair system
Monofilament wigs for men are known for their durability and breathability. They usually carry a thicker base compared to the previously listed hair bases. What also contributes to the durability is that it’s either made with poly or lace materials, more so the former.
Mono bases offer amazing features – In addition to being breathable and durable, they’re easy to attach, remove and maintain when combined with poly skin. The trade-off is that monofilament base hair systems aren’t as natural-looking due to the high hair density they usually carry.
Whatever hair system you do end up choosing is all based on your preference. If you’re leaning towards natural-looking hair qualities, choose a hair system with either a lace or ultra thin skin base as they’re best for a realistic look.
The lace base is more breathable and comfortable. On the other hand, the thin skin hair system carries more hair volume and is easier to maintain if you’re lacking for time.
If you don’t care about natural looks and prefer a hairpiece that offers breathability and durability, opt for the mono base hair system. However, be wary of the hair density and ensure you choose something suitable for daily usage if that’s what you’re aiming for.
